The short story makes use of the setting to highlight the theme. Therefore, for the main task, students are assigned to construct the timeline of the story. In making the timeline, they are expected to base their work on the events of the story. Making the timeline will challenge their analytical skills as they cut out Grandma Phoenixs trail. Likewise, the visuals they will make will help to strengthen their knowledge of the plot, thence lead them to a deeper understanding of the story.

Knowledge Workers and the Brooklyn Bridge 8 Essay

Knowledge Workers and the Brooklyn Bridge 8 - Essay Exampleengineers, namely Washington Robeling and those who worked with him, that were mainly concerned with design aspects such as fellowship of gradient, impact of erosion by water over time, angles for rafters and columns and related information.Designing and construction of a bridge requires a basic knowledge and science of the many aspects constituting optimum structural and mechanical performance. (Fertis, xiii). In the case of a highway bridge, dynamic and vibration analysis that carrys to be carried out requires knowledge of the basic properties of the materials and cables that are used to build the bridge. Such knowledge of material properties is then used in performing the atmospherics and dynamic analysis, in developing a bridge design that is safe as well as functional. The static and dynamic analysis will involve calculations to determine both static and dynamic deformations of the bridge, together with its frequenci es of vibration. This will to a fault involve conclusions to be drawn on how long the bridge span should be in order to stop up that its rigidity is maintained in a safe design. Hence a knowledge worker working on the design and construction of the bridge in Robelings day would also beget required a basic knowledge of statics, mechanics and structural mechanics. A knowledge worker would thus need to be acquainted with basic engineering concepts in designing of bridges.Communication in those days when the Brooklyn Bridge was first built centered around ad hominem contact, hence these were restricted to light signals and Robelais passing on his communications through his wife. As a result, workers had to possess communication skills in interacting with members of their teams, most of whom were likely to have been drawn from the same local area of New York and largely comprising immigrants. But the kind of communication systems being used in the present day is also different from tho se existing during the time of Robelais. Knowledge workers may

Trade agreements Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Trade agreements - Essay ExampleIt is also seen that in the background of EU, the aspects of consistency are important. The relationships of EU with its trading partners, Africa needs to be seen in the larger context of consistency. This is because the EU cannot afford to excite one set of rules at one point of time and a different set at an separate. There are around 79 countries in the ACP membership list (African Caribbean Pacific list) and have been the beneficiaries of favored treatment for special access to European markets. (The EU in the world the foreign policy of the European Union 2007).The main occupation is that African Nation is having a fear that it brings back that EU colonial system in the country. They are thinking that it willing limit their development and would via media their sovereignty. European Union is of the view that it will promote development in science and technology results in mutual benefit. Relation between both nations will help to facilitate A frica into world scrimping by promoting growth and investment. It provides provision for social and cultural cooperation and financial assistance. However, this is all with a return bargain that the EU goods shall be allowed to enter the ACP countries at lowered tariffs, and shall enjoy being the destination point for the goods of EU in these countries. This lowering of tariff of imported goods hurts the local economy since now imported goods would vie with local goods which, apparently would be highly priced in the local markets. The consumers would opt for cheaper imported goods and thus local industry would have no option but to stagnate, without government protection and subsidies. However, the main advantages of trade agreements is that the economy would become more competitive and , in the current globalised setting , it would be constrained to improve on all aspects- quality, quantity, pricing , servicing and customer retention. The most important element of the bilateral agre ement remains the establishment of a FTA between the EU and South Africa. (Drew 2000). The aspects of government subsidies and grants to local products could be seen in the larger context of protectionist measures intended to alleviate the onslaught of competitive products, and to create gross generations for the Government. In the long run, agricultural subsidies and grants to farmers, especially in the ACP countries, do more harm than good, and could have long term deleterious effects on the governmental proceedings. In the African context, it is seen that their problem is not in terms of having market access to European markets but in having a volume of goods and services to be exported, in terms of bulk, and at reasonable prices caused by achieving economies of large-scale operations. When volume content is not available, the ACP would not be able to make competitive inroads into other export markets and this forms the nucleas of the problem over time. The EPAs are thus meant to change the relationship between Europe and Africa, from one built on preferential tariffs - an eroding line of life - to one that builds lasting and more efficient markets for Africa. (Neroth 2007).The main disadvantages of the Trade Agreements could be seen in terms of the fact that the World Trade Organizations has ruled that all countries in a bloc need to be equally treated in trade and no preferential treatment could be accorded. The EU and ACP have been disposed(p) a

Civil War - Essay Example virtue was site forward as a measure to placate the South which was upset over the increasing number of supernumerary states and anti- hard workerry sentiments penetrating the government. The law enforced fines on all law personnel who did not arrest a run slave. Prior to this act, the fugitive slave act of 1793 was in action which demanded the return of run-away slaves from the free states. In other words, it was asking the North which termed slavery illegal to abide by the slavery laws of the South. This was in direct contrast with the Northern sentiments. In some(prenominal) states like Massachusetts that had abolished slavery during the eighteenth century, the idea of returning slaves was met with great resistance. The law was not only dangerous for the run-away slaves but also for the free blacks, sight who were born and raised in the Free states. The law could easily be misused and these people could then be shipped to the South having been unjustl y termed as run-away slaves. The law was not acceptable to the North as it was asking them to become part of enforcing slavery throughout the country. The intention of this law was exacerbate the ensuing tension amongst the North and the South, however it further increased the divide. The law gave rise to many abolitionist leader like Frederick Douglas who raised their voice actively against the discrimination. The fugitive slave act was soon followed by the Kansas Nebraska act in the 1854 which further increased the divide. The ultimate blow was however dealt during the Kansas killings when proslavery as well as antislavery supporters inundate from the North as well as the South to cast their votes. The ultimate result of all the chaos and bloodshed was the civil war itself which decided erst and for all the fate of slavery in the country. The Civil War can undoubtedly be called as one of the most influential events in American history whose effects helped shape the American natio n. It is important to study the causes of an event which is of

Creation and implementation of an effective recruiting and retention Research Paper

Creation and implementation of an potent recruiting and retention program - Research Paper ExampleRegards . slacken of contents 1. Introduction 3 2. Problem statement 3 3. Review of current practices 3 4. Strategic plan for recruitment and retention 4 5. capital punishment strategy 5 6. Final recommendations and possible outcomes 5 7. Conclusions 6 References Appendices 1. Introduction Current businesses are challenged with high employee turnover irrespective of various human election development and employee-friendly practices. Therefore, it is imperative for organizations to explore various other opportunities to reduce employee turnover while abiding by obligatory requirements, which can save costs and purify profits. This paper presents some potential solutions to high employee turnover issues in addition to some recommendations for implementing these solutions before concluding with key points. 2. Problem Statement Recruiting and retaining the sometime(a) and disenable wo rk groups are challenging, entirely provide many advantages too. Organizations in the IT sector, like Cognizant Technology Solutions (CTS), invest huge amount of money in develop their employees to perform as per expected standards, which eventually lead to losses when employees leave for outside opportunities. Immense competition and advanced communication technologies that have given turn up to numerous opportunities have constantly haunted organizations in the IT sectors resulting in large voluntary employee turnover. Most of the times, practices in recruiting and retaining employees do not seem to be line up to organizational strategies and long-term objectives one such example is practices to implement diversity. Most of the companies do not put optimum efforts to hire diverse workforce, which can real provide competitive advantage. 3. Review of current practices Strategic human resources management focuses on integrating human resource planning, recruitment, selection and retention in a manner that not only assists in achieving organizational or departmental objectives but also sustain the organizational position and performance through effective HR practices and procedures (Armstrong, 2008). Currently, most of the recruitment occurs electronically as this medium provides larger database to recruit the best candidate however, this medium provides little or no personal/human contact that would be required for appropriate assessment of the candidate. Moreover, usage of internet is not similar among all groups of job seekers. For instance, Scott, Snell and Bohlander point out at the 2010 study by Kessler Foundation, which indicated only 54% of disabled using internet for job search compared to 85% of non-disabled candidates. Such disproportion could affect companys efforts towards exercise diversity, which is a legal and moral obligation. Spiezia (2002) highlights that employing older workers can be beneficial, a very important retention program empl oyed by some organizations, but ignored by many. Studies indicate that older workers are more loyal, committed, honest compared to younger counterparts (Spiezia, 2002) however, some studies also indicate that the reason for many organizations overlooking older workforce is lower productivity, slower learning and potential health risk (Ashworth, 2008). Nevertheless, employing older and disabled workforce is a legal and moral obligation of organizations. Moreover, worker shortages can be overcome by employing the older and disabled

An introduction for the germination experiment Lab Report

An introduction for the sprouting experiment - Lab Report ExampleSeed germination process is comprised of several steps. First, the seed absorbs water from the surrounding environment through osmosis. Water absorbed activates enzymes, increases the rate of respiration and leads to duplication of plant cells. Secondly, the chemical slide fastener stored as starch is converted to sugar and serves the embryo as food during the process of germination. The embryo is nourished and enlarged resulting in seed coat burst. Lastly, a root tip known as the radicle emerges from the seed and grows downwards to anchor the seed. The radicle enables the embryo to absorb water and minerals from the soil (Jirage 1).A study on the personal effects of treatment on seed germination volition be carried out as a laboratory experiment. The experiment will involve a non-dominant corn whisky seed and a treatment acid. The experiment will comprise three setups. The first set-up will involve low level of the acid and the second will contain high levels of the acid. The third set-up will be a control- experiment that will not involve any treatment.Pre-treating with an appropriate concentration of Gibberellic acid (hormone G A3) plays an import role in the induction of tolerance to salinity. Additionally, it helps the seed overcome the environmental stress, such as osmotic effects, nutritional imbalance and ionic toxicity. This give the sack be achieved through strong root and shoot length that gives a response to salt stress (Jamil

How to Use Gold in Wind Turbine Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

How to Use Gold in Wind Turbine - Case Study ExampleThis explains the re-emergence of sneak government agency as a green and sustainable source of energy. The argument behind the re-emergence of wind index numbers source of energy cannot only be looked at in the linguistic context of milling rain or pumping of water as was the case in the past, but is all close to the energy needs that have grown imputable to globalization and industrialization (Schmid and Klein 1990, p.17). Wind power is generally harnessed from wind in motion, which is transformed into energy with the help of a wind turbine. Blaabjerg and Chen (2006 p.1) placard that wind turbine has been one of the fastest growing renewable energy technologies. Its development began in the 1980s with just some tens of kilowatts in terms of power paygrade to the current megawatts. Blaabjerg and Chen argue that in the past, production of wind power did not have a lot of impact in the system of power operation and control, but today it contributes a lot in energy supply since the level of power penetration is on the rapid increase (Paraschivoiu 2002 p.45). In the beginning, the technology employ in wind turbine was generally the squirrel-cage induction generators, which were directly being connected to the grid. During this time, there were no active controls of active power reactors. The parameters used for control has become necessary due to the increase in the power range for the wind turbines. Blaabjerg and Chen note that the introduction of power electronics has led to a change in the basic characteristics of the wind turbine from a source of energy to an active source of power. In recent times, many nations are making a rash toward the use of gold in the manufacture of the wind turbines. This paper will discuss the main exposits that make up a wind turbine and their functions. The paper will also discuss the choice of materials that are used in the manufacture of the major parts and where gold as a bare-assed material is used under the current design and where it can be used. Main Parts Of A Wind Turbine And Their Functions Ancona and Mc Veigh (2001 p.1) note that wind turbines ordinarily come in a varying sizes and configurations, built from different materials. The wind turbine consists of four main parts the rotor which has wing-shaped blades connected to a hub a nacelle which holds a drivetrain consisting of a gearbox, support bearing, connecting shaft, the generator and the machinery a tower and the electrical equipment mounted on the ground Ancona and Mc Veigh (2001 p.3). Turbine Rotor Blade The turbine rotor is the part that coverts the alternating wind energy into a mechanical energy, which is then converted into electrical energy via a generator, which is then moved to the grid with the help of a transformer and lines of transmission. Within the wind turbine there exists a blade aerodynamically designed that captures the wind power and converts it to rotating mech anical energy. Blaabjerg and Chen (2006 p.3) note that the number of blades that make the rotor whitethorn vary. The speed of rotation usually decreases with an increase in the radius of the blades. For instance, for a wind turbine of megawatt range, the speed of rotation ranges between 10-15 rpm. The blades exist in different sizes from about 34 to 55 meters. The rotor blades are made of materials such as carbon fiber, balsa wood, and fiberglass with high tensile ratio. The materials are usually sculptural to form airfoils that

The research aims to show the gap of knowledg e concerning confidence in Islamic bonds (sukuk) after the Dubai financial crisis. There are trio types of literature that have been discovered firstly, literature about the causes of the financial crisis which has happened in Dubai secondly, literature about the impact on sukuk after the Dubai financial crisis and finally, literature concerning the opening of sukuk which is based on the Islamic financial system. Klomp (2009), in his journal about the significant causes of the banking crisis, says that the absolute important factors that affect directly on a financial crisis are 1) High credit growth 2) Negative GDP growth 3) High real interest rates. Lewis (2010) has other points in his journal that say that the causes of the financial crisis include individual and cognitive psychology, social influences, psychology used by economists, the good society, and culture and human agency. Rotheli (2010) believes that the causes of the financial crisis can be summarised as adventure mi sperception, policy mistakes, and banks bounded rationality. He agrees with Klomp (2009) in a credit cycle in which banks increase their credit supply and stop lending during recessions. That puts banks in a troubled situation in the future, where investors can pay their debts. The financial crisis of Dubai, as mentioned by Bassens, Derudder and Witlox (2010), started in November 2009 when the latest news informed that the largest development agency in Dubai,
