Race in the society will be conveyed to the audience as a very sensitive issue resulting to a lot of racial hatred amongst the people of Cairo. I have decided to set the stage as a beach, which in my opinion is an ideal location as a public place. At the opening of act 3 scene1, I would advice the actors playing Mercutio and Benvolio to enter from right-hand side of the stage, as it would look more appropriate seen as their racial group is also on the right side of the stage. Mercutio will enter first by making his entrance loud, joyous and vivacious this will be conveyed in the form of Mercutio singing and dancing immediately giving the impression to the audience that he is a very cynical character. Soon after Mercutio entrance, Benvolio will enter following him closely; as he enters he will be shouting for Mercutio-Mercutio, Mercutio, my dear friend Mercutio. Both Characters walk towards the centre (division line) with Mercutio in front greeting his associates as he passes by and Benvolio following him closely emphasizing fear by his facial expression. The atmosphere on stage overall will be positive, joyous and very lively as the lights are shining brightly on stage creating the image of a hot day, with the sun at its peak. Although the atmosphere is positive there will be clear emphasis of the racial tension as members of both group are very cautions to not step over the division line. As Mercutio and Benvolio reach centre stage (division line), Benvolio caringly places his hand on Mercutios shoulder pleading him to retire in a very persuasive tone. As he wipes his immense forehead he continues to read lines 2-4, The day is hot, the Capels are abroad, And if we meet we shall not escape a brawl, For now these hot days, is the mad blood stirring As Benvolio reads the above lines he constantly looks around the stage in fear of the Capulets arrival, this can also be seen by the constant removal of sweat from his forehead. Mercutio replies to Benvolio in a sarcastic but also serious tone by firstly removing Benvolios hand from his shoulder, slowly and walking carelessly away him whilst reading lines 5-8 Thou art like one of these fellows that, when he enters the Confines of a tavern, claps me his sword upon the table, and says God send me no need of thee!; and by the operation of the second Cup draws him on the drawer, when indeed there is no need Benvolios appears concerned of the accusations made about him by Mercutio, whom seems so careless that ignores the concerned Benvolio and continues to read out the lines above. Benvolio who is standing stationary at centre stage confused and worried by the accusations made by his fellow friend, Mercutio, turns and walks towards him. As he approaches Mercutio from the back he reads the following line: Am I like such a fellow? Mercutio turns to face the concerned Benvolio who is standing behind him, and reads lines 10-12 in an eased tone placing both his hands on Benvolios shoulders. Benvolio disturbed by Mercutios accusations tries to continue to read line 13, appearing a little confused by what is being said. Mercutio removes his hands and turns around to continue mingling with his associates giving the impression he is not bothered in what Benvolio is saying but still replies. As the conversation between Benvolio and Mercutio continues, Mercutios tone of voice becomes a lot more aggressive and confrontational. This is clear given in the content of his speech (between lines 14-26) in which he ironically accuses Benevolio of being aggressive. Benvolio is distressed by what Mercutio is saying, who seems to be walking further away from him and ignoring the concern he has caused. Mercutio is walking towards right centre stage when Benvolio runs in front of him pleading him to retire as he continues to plead Mercutio to retire he glances around the stage briskly and notices Tybalt entering from the left hand side of the stage. The audience are quickly notified of the fear in Benvolio whom quickly lets go of the hands of Mercutio, which he was holding whilst pleading him to retire, portraying the fear. This can also be observed by the lights being brought down to a dim shade creating an atmosphere of tension. Mercutio whom seems to not be bothered of the sudden removal of Benvolios hands continues to mingle and dance with his associates. Mercutio walks past Benvolio who is standing in a stationary position in fear and concern of what may happen, immediately runs back infront of Mercutio announcing that Tybalt is one the scene. Again, maintaining his carelessness, Mercutio replies in an ironic tone and continues to dance and sing along with his associates. Tybalt whose appearance alerts the audience as people (public) begin to leave the stage from both sides immediately gives the audience that the outcome to come ahead is looking severe (i.e.perhaps a fight). Tybalt gives the impression he is superior this can be expressed by his entrance and is not impressed by the mockery being made by Mercutio with his loud and sardonic dancing and singing. Trying to remain calm and collective, Tybalt reads lines 32-33 in a calm but tense tone but Mercutio continues to dance and sing loudly alone, all of a sudden there is silence on stage and Mercutio stops dancing and looks around and pretends to have just noticed Tybalt whom is beginning to loose his patience. Mercutio replies to Tybalt who is standing centre stage left (near the division line) and replies in an ironic tone. Mercutio whom is rather offended by Tybalt walking away from him makes another snide comment trying to provoke Tybalt to a fight; Tybalt on the other hand carefree walks away from Mercutio and ignores the comment made by him, which increases the frustration in Mercutio. Tybalt hoping to seek revenge from the absent-minded Romeo whom refuses Tybalts challenge to fight and tries to placate him by a peace offering of a hand shake. Tybalt furiously hits away Romeos hand with his foot refusing to do any such thing whilst reading lines 59-60 in a very angry and aggressive tone of voice: Buy, this shall not excuse the injuries that thou hast done to me, therefore turn and draw Romeos response to the above speech read by Tybalt is a shock to everyone in lines 61-65. Romeo runs forward from right stage to centre stage in between the two characters pleading them to stop, facing Mercutio, Romeo reads lines 78-81 in great agony holding Mercutios hand to show his love and affection for his dear friend and pleads him to put away his gun. Two gunshots are heard on stage, one shot by Tybalt and the other by Mercutio to signify they are both ready for a fight. Romeo is forcefully removed from Mercutio by him but reluctant to move away Romeo comes back resulting to Romeo and Mercutio on the floor with Romeo on top trying to remove the gun from his friends hand. Tybalt watches the two friends in amusement and sees an ideal opportunity in seeking revenge from Romeo whilst he was on the floor. A gunshot is heard and there is silence on the stage, the lights go out, a loud scream is heard and people running of stage. The lights are put on again very shortly at a very dim shade; lying centre stage is Mercutio with Romeo, Benvolio and his other associates. Romeo lets out a huge sigh of relief not aware that his dear friend is severely injured. As he removes himself from Mercutio he notices blood on his hand, at first he is confused but later sees his dear friend, Mercutio lying beside him sweating in pain, Benvolio runs to Mercutios aid. Romeo tries to console his friend by telling him the wound cannot be very severe and so be brave. Mercutio replies in a sarcastic but also angry tone of voice portraying how severe his pain is by reading lines 88-94. Mercutios tone of voice between lines 88-94 becomes a lot weaker emphasizing the great deal of pain he is in but also becomes a lot more angry also emphasizing his anger towards Romeo for coming between him and Tybalt during the fight. The following line is said with great deal of anger and aggression by Mercutio even though he is in a great deal of pa in; A plague a both houses Although the above line is said by Mercutio numerous times after the fight it is seen as a vital speech, the tone used for this speech by the actor will be very serious with no use of irony as these are the last words heard by this particular actor on stage. The actor should emphasize by his facial expression that the mental wounds these two families have caused him are a lot more severe than the physical wound he is dying from at this present time. This expression should be very clear and visual resulting to the actual speech presented on stage being a lot more effective and successful. Mercutio exits right side stage with the aid of Benvolio and other associates. Romeo sits on the floor at centre stage, crying as a result to Mercutios speech. His facial and body language portray the overall effect of Mercutios speech. There is silence on the stage as the dim shade of light is brought to centre stage focusing on Romeo. Romeo reads lines 100-106 in a very emotional tone with tears running down his face emphasizing his response to what has happened. Suddenly, the lights are drawn back from centre to backstage creating a dim shade on the entire stage. Benvolio runs onto stage from right side stage, calling for Romeo! loudly as he enters. He stands centre right stage shouting for Romeo whilst glancing around the stage, finally he notices Romeo on the floor centre stage, who does not respond when being called for by Benvolio. Benvolio rushes to him at once, placing his hand on his shoulder whilst announcing the dreadful news regarding the death of Mercutio. He reads lines 107-109 very slowly in an emotional tone of voice clearly portraying to the audience that Benvolio himself is disturbed by the horrific news. Romeo is shocked by the news as he does not make any physical movement for a moment and his facial expression emphasizes the shock and devastation due to the death of Mercutio. Romeo whos feeling are confused with a mixture of emotion and aggression of the present situation declares revenge for his dear friends death. Tybalt struggles to remove the gun from his left ankle whilst on the floor. The aggressive and absent minded Romeo takes out his gun and shoots Tybalt in the chest whilst he is on the floor struggling to get up. There is silence on the stage as Tybalt draws his last breath. Tybalt lies left centre stage, Romeo stands gazing at his body in shock. Benvolio struggles to pull Romeo who is standing stationary with the murder weapon in his hands, Benvolio finally manages to take the confused and shocked Romeo off right-side stage. Enter Tybalts friend Petruchio and associates, they discover Tybalts dead body. Moments later a police officer arrives on the stage questionning people regarding the murders that took place. There is silence on the stage as the Prince enters from centre backstage with the Capulets entering on to the stage from the left side and the Montagues from the right side of the stage. The silence remains on the stage for a few moments till Lady Capulet cries aloud after viewing the body of her dear cousin Tybalt. The Prince is at centre stage where he reads line 132 out aloud Where are the vile beginners of this fray? The silence remains on the stage as the Prince glances around at the people on the stage. Benvolio speaks in a confident and noble tone of voice responding to the Princes question. Benvolio very briefly tells who is responsible for the deaths he does not add any biased views, he simply speaks aloud declaring who killed whom. Lady Capulet cries loudly after hearing that Romeo was responsible for the death of her beloved cousin and declares that the only punishment appropriate is capital punishment. The Prince, taking in account what Lady Capulet has said asks Benvolio in a serious but angry tone (because of all the grief these families have caused this society) what had happened. Bevolio tell the story as it happened and there are no biased views added showing the trustworthy and honest character he is. He begins by explaining how Tybalt helped put himself where he is by killing Mercuito. Benvolio standing directly in front of the Prince tells the story behind the two deaths. The tone of voice used during this speech is very serious and non-biased. His facial expression also is very serious making his speech overall a lot more effective. Lines 143-153 are explained by Benvolio clearly showing the actions of each character especially Tybalt who started this whole fiasco when he killed Mercutio. Benvolio explains in detail how Romeo came between Mercuito and Tybalt during the fight and as a result Mercutio was wounded under Romeos arm. He then moves on to saying in the last lines of his speech, lines 154-165 how the devastated Romeo confused in his emotions over the death of Romeo, he kills Tybalt. It is important that the characters tone of voice does not change during this time because Romeo is a friend of his. Benvolio must maintain his serious and confident tone, as this is a huge reflection to his character. The speech ends at line 166 where Benvolio swears the account of the murders is true. The tone used for this final part of the speech is very trusting and again serious; This is the truth, or let Benvolio die After Benvolios account of the incident that occurred Lady Capulets speaks furiously in a bitter tone of voice, not accepting his account of the incident simply because hes a Montague. She also declares once again to the Prince that Romeo must be given the Capital Punishment and nothing less. Hearing Lady Capulet, Lady Montague cries out aloud that Romeo is not to blame for his actions but Tybalt. Her tone is very serious and pleads the Prince for not capital Punishment. Lady Montague is in tears afraid of what her sons future holds for him and is being comforted by her husband. There is silence on the stage just before the Prince gives the final verdict. The verdict is said in a sorrowful tone but also serious tone as both families were informed of the consequences of such severe actions. The Montagues cry out a loud emphasizing their response to the verdict, whilst the Capulets leave the stage after the Prince (left side stage) not satisfied with the verdict. Benvolio puts his head down, speechless in response to the verdict. The lights go off and the curtains falls, Act 3 scene 1 ends.

Prejudice is a learnt trait Essay Prejudice is the quality or condition of judging someone or a group of people before you meet them, usually by using stereotypes. People are not born to be prejudice; they are taught and influenced by their parents, friends and surroundings. Furthermore, prejudicial attitudes stem from ignorance and this leads to an unbreakable chain. So how do people develop prejudice? Parents and teachers constantly remind children of â€Å"stranger danger† and this creates a template of who is dangerous which then carries onto their views later on in their lives. The template created by adults teaches children to have prejudicial attitudes towards certain types of people. If your parents taught you to trust women rather than men, as a child, wouldn’t you believe them? Children choose to believe their parents’ points of views because they haven’t had the opportunity to create their own opinions. As adults, parents would already have multiple experiences with different people and cultures, which they pass onto their children. As well as passing on their own knowledge, parents also hand down their prejudicial attitudes to their children. You can form opinions without having to get the facts. † People choose to believe stereotypes because they’re easier to understand but also because they’re afraid of challenging them. Prejudice is the chain forged by ignorance to keep men apart, which is exactly why it is so unnatural. It goes against human nature to want to be apart from other people yet society is convinced that prejudice is normal and therefore acceptable to pass onto future generations. This belief is what causes the chain of prejudice to be unbreakable. People are prisoners of their own experiences. â€Å"No one can escape prejudice- only recognise them. † People recognise prejudicial attitudes and even berate others for being prejudiced when in reality, they’re doing the same thing. Narrative Argument About Education Religion Essay

Considering the gift of computers Bill Gates bestowed upon libraries for students, I’m sure his intentions were for the students to excel and keep abreast of the ever changing world of technology, not to replace reading with surfing the web. I agree with Judith Levine when she stated, â€Å"It’s important for students to read books, magazines, newspapers, history, poetry, politics and listen to people who know what they’re talking about.† Reading books and other literature teaches students the past, present and future, not only for things happening in the world today but facts about things past. Dating myself, I think back to the days of the sixties and seventies when reading was fundamental to education. Literacy was important and the only choice we had was to read a book because there were no computers. Teachers took us to the library weekly, and we were required to check out at least one book and read it. There was also time set aside during class for u s to stand up and read a portion of your book aloud. Most of our books had no pictures to stimulate the imagination, so you felt a sense of accomplishment when the book was finished. Teachers took education very serious, and they knew reading was essential to be successful in life; therefore, they made sure we took it serious as well. When we read a story for a writing assignment, our first resource was the encyclopedia, which was neatly stacked inside the bookcase in almost every home. There were no short cuts to obtaining information. Reading is more empowering than one-click learning; you develop increased discernibility and critical thinking skills. Computers are a great tool. I use one every day for my online college courses and I know how important it is to question everything I retrieve on the internet. Computers, however, have made students slack  and lazy. From a very young age children have developed the attitude of not liking to read and with computers supplying all the answers for them, they don’t have to. As I sit and look at my blank computer screen, and time is ticking away until my essay is due, I read my story once again. I also head for the web, but only to get ideas and something to assist me with my starting point. Nothing takes the place of old fashioned reading. I know my subject is education and my story is talking about computers, so I google education using computers. One site – Using Technology: Ways to use Computers/Education.com – catches my eye, but after accessing the site I soon find this is not the site or the data that’s going to help me prepare a creditable paper. So I reread my story and the instructions, put my critical thinking cap on and choose not to one stop shop for my assignment. I begin writing everything I can think of and soon the ideas surface. This is unlike inexperienced users, like our children and grandchildren, who rely heavily on data they retrieve from the internet without considering how much weight the site is going to hold, and what kind of argument the data will present to their readers who may feel they did not provide enough information about the topic. Our students have become accustom to presenting data found on the web as fact, giving no thought to how bias the information might be . Some even portray the data as their own, without verifying its validity. Parents need to share some of the responsibility, because we are not teaching our children the difference between working hard and hardly working. From a Biblical perspective Deuteronomy 6: 4-9 states: â€Å"Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates†. This command from God explains why education is important, and why it is our responsibility as parents to educate our children, both academic and Biblically. My eighty-three year old Uncle Mike was a prime example of why getting an education is important. He only had about an eighth grade education and virtually no Biblical  knowledge. Because of his limitations, he was never able to make a decent living throughout his life. He also had no knowledge of who God was and expressed no desire to be saved. His soul was doomed to hell; however, I never gave up on Uncle Mike. I knew it was God’s will that everyone be saved, and on July 28th, 2013, his eyes were opened, and his heart soften as he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior two days before he passed away. In conclusion, computer use has caused us to no longer read books or utilize our critical thinking skills. Our students have become slack and lazy and collect unreliable data to present as facts. We must guide and teach them how to surf the web and to become better readers, which in turn, will make them better writers. Importance of deadlines Essay

I have never worked in any job were it is acceptable to miss deadlines. Deadlines should never be disregarded as they are. I can offer no explanation as to why people routinely complain about instructors who do not return graded tests and papers when promised; faculty routinely complain about colleagues who neglect to complete their work on time; and I have seen administrators that simply plead with faculty, time and again, to complete long-overdue assessments or other important work. I’ll grant that in the current economic circumstances, with many academic units at many colleges, universities and branches underfunded and understaffed, faculty and staff alike are being asked to do more and more work with fewer people, fewer resources, and less time. But if we’re being honest we have to admit that the problem of faculty who are unaccountable to deadlines is an older problem than the current economic crisis; within academe the problem is endemic, systemic, epidemic. Regardless of the cause, when the routine, sometimes mundane business of the university is neglected or even just delayed, complications and stress cascade through the ranks, amplifying the problems that fellow faculty, staff, and even students must then deal with and solve. Even worse, sometimes the most egregious offenders when it comes to blowing off deadlines are senior faculty, who should, frankly, know and behave better. One step toward reducing the stress and work we create for others, and ourselves, might be to take more seriously the deadlines that often accompany our work, but that are sometimes neglected when faculty perceive, often quite wrongly, that there are no negative consequences for missing a deadline. Some deadlines are absolutely rigid, such as the filing dates for theses and dissertations, the sorts of deadlines that must be met if one hopes to graduate on time. These rigid deadlines are the types of bureaucratic  deadlines that we have to navigate routinely in order to complete graduate degrees, apply for grants, or otherwise navigate the complex institutions of the modern academy. Other deadlines are effectively rigid. When your department chair or a fellow faculty member assigns you a task with a due date, it behooves all faculty members to regard those sorts of deadlines as rigid, especially if you don’t have tenure. Such deadlines might be negotiable in some circumstances, but they aren’t to be disregarded altogether. Blowing off your campus bookstore’s deadline for textbook orders, for example, may seem like a trivial lapse. But potentially, missing even such a seemingly small deadline creates additional work for the already-swamped employees placing the orders, and it can result in higher costs for students if books have to be rush-shipped or if the window to order used texts is missed. Even though you are unlikely to suffer personally for missing the deadline, others may suffer. A whole other set of the deadlines that we face in academe are self-imposed, milestones that we set for ourselves in order to complete the nebulous, long-running projects that often comprise research and scholarship. Even though such self-imposed deadlines are â€Å"soft,† in that there is no enforcer that will come forward and punish, chastise, or cajole us if we miss them, I think that it’s generally a bad idea to miss even the deadlines that we set for ourselves. Assuming, and this is a big assumption, that the deadlines we set for ourselves are realistic. These soft deadlines can’t be taken too lightly — the ability, or inability, to set and meet goals without external guidance or enforcement will determine whether or not a tenure-track faculty member is able to meet expectations for scholarly productivity and ultimately win tenure. One of the tricks to managing these soft deadlines is learning to set goals that are both meaningful and realistic. It is much easier said than done, and hopefully an advanced graduate student receives extensive mentorship on how to manage the research workload. Cooperative, self-policing structures like writing groups are one way to formalize soft deadlines and hold ourselves  accountable to ourselves and to others to complete, or at least make progress on, our long-term projects. An important part of managing our work is knowing how to differentiate between soft and rigid deadlines, and how to prioritize deadlines across all of the varieties of work required of faculty. Deadlines matter in our interactions with students as well. My feeling is that if I am going to hold students strictly accountable to a deadline, then I too need to be accountable in similar ways. When I give my students writing assignments, each assignment is accompanied by a specifically articulated series of deadlines for when drafts and peer reviews are due, a deadline for each stage of the writing process, each of which students are expected to meet. But my assignments also include deadlines for myself, essentially promises of when I will return things like graded papers. Holding students strictly to deadlines, but then failing to return work in a timely manner, sends a message of hypocrisy to students that they immediately detect and disdain. I hold myself as accountable to self-imposed deadlines, just as I hold my students accountable. By advertising my own deadlines for tasks like grading, in this case on the writing assignment itself, I create a mechanism that forces me to be accountable. When it comes to interacting with colleagues, I also work hard to meet deadlines. As a junior faculty member, I never want to be the squeaky wheel, never want to be the committee member who fails to turn in work on time and holds up other people and an entire process. My unwillingness to be branded as a shirker is in addition, of course, to the glaringly obvious point that it is simply a common courtesy to meet administrative deadlines. Everyone in the university has work to do, much of it important work, and failing to do our own work in a timely, professional manner unnecessarily delays the work of others. There are certainly times when we realize that we will be unable to meet a deadline. If you foresee missing an externally imposed deadline, it’s both courteous and good policy to let interested parties know, sooner rather than  later, that you may be delayed in delivering your work. Such a warning at least allows others involved in the work to improvise an accommodation. Simply allowing a deadline to pass without a word of warning is discourteous and doesn’t allow others to help ameliorate the effects of your own delays. And missed deadlines are almost always noticed, even when the matter at hand may seem trivial. As you progress in your career, you may be asked to peer-review manuscripts that have been submitted to journals in your subdiscipline. It is especially important to meet an editor’s deadlines when conducting reviews of manuscripts. Some disciplines have a culture of turning reviews around quickly, while other disciplines (particularly in the humanities) are notorious for a tradition of taking months, sometimes even over a year, simply to review manuscripts. As a result of slow turnarounds and senior scholars who can sometimes be cavalierly unconcerned about conducting reviews in a timely manner, junior scholars often suffer. I once had a journal hold onto an article of mine for four months, during which time a staffer sent me a cryptic message implying that the article was undergoing review. After four months had passed, I was notified that the editor had decided not to send out the article for review, and to reject it outright. The editor was well within his rights to reject the article, but to take four months to do so was lazy and unprofessional in the extreme, and borderline unethical. Secondarily, because the article had not been sent out to reviewers, but simply sat on the editor’s desk, I did not even have the benefit of the feedback of reviews. Those four months were time that I could have spent revising the article, or submitting it at a different journal. Unfortunately, such stories are legion, and I have heard much more egregious examples of how editors’ or reviewers’ failures to keep to a reasonable schedule have hurt the publication prospects of junior scholars. Unfortunately, we are often tasked with work that feels trivial or futile. Or meaningful work simply piles up into seemingly unmanageable stacks. Every faculty member I know feels overwhelmed at some point in the semester. Nonetheless, when we neglect to complete work in a timely manner, our  colleagues and students sometimes suffer.
